As with many musical genres in Mexico, men have dominated the marimba, but a new generation of women are finding ways to play the music they love.
In Chiapas, young women are emerging to play the marimba, a traditional musical instrument and genre that represents local identity. The southern Mexican state is home to various professional and amateur marimba groups, and many of the 122 municipalities have an official marimba orchestra.
