Father and son had left the Costa Azul in Pijijiapan to go shark fishing some 130 kilometers offshore. Twenty-three days later they were spotted floating in an ice chest by a freighter in waters off the state of Guerrero, about 700 kilometers from home.

Daniel Martínez Guerrero, 48, and his 18-year-old son Isaías of Paredón, in the municipality of Tonalá, were delivered to Acapulco by their rescuers aboard a United States-flagged freighter Tuesday night.

Daniel Martínez said they had encountered bad weather two days after leaving and their boat sank in a strong wind and high waves. They were able to climb into the ice chest, where they spent the next three weeks.

...The pair were hospitalized for severe dehydration upon their arrival in Acapulco, when they also made contact with their family.
