Alfredo Castillo Cervantes, former Federal Commissioner of Michoacán (Aristegui Noticias)
On Thursday, Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong, Secretary of Government Relations, announced the departure of Alfredo Castillo from Michoacán, where he served as Federal Commissioner. Osorio Chong said that President Enrique Peña Nieto has decided that Castillo conclude his assignment, "to take on new responsibilities in the government of the Republic."
As of today, the federal government appointed a special official for Michoacán, General Felipe Gurrola Ramírez, who will coordinate all public security activities in the state.
Secretary Osorio Chong claimed: "Today this great state is stronger than it was one year ago," since Castillo was appointed commissioner in January 2014.
The Secretary added: "Today we can say that the situation prevailing in Michoacan is different ... not meaning that everything is resolved." About his departure, Castillo said that "history will judge us in due course."
In his remarks on Thursday, Castillo said that the infiltration of organized crime in Michoacán had arrived at the "highest places".
