CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico — Love Baja? You likely heard plenty about Hurricane Odile, which barreled ashore with 125 mph winds at Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo last September.
Many say it was the strongest hurricane in memory to score a bull's-eye on the region collectively known as Los Cabos. The storm injured hundreds, flattened homes and tore the roof off the domestic terminal in the modern Los Cabos International Airport.
Of roughly 26,000 tourists who weathered the storm, some cowered in hotel stairwells. Many waited days for evacuation. Power and water systems went down for weeks. The airport closed to incoming flights for most of a month. The local Costco shut for weeks because of damage and looting.
Some hotels escaped major damage and never closed. Others reopened in recent months, but a number remain busy with repairs and renovations and won’t welcome guests back until summer.
So if you’re a regular Baja visitor, should you go soon? Or skip 2015, to wait for a complete recovery? If you go, what should you expect?
One thing you might anticipate but will have to search for: discounted rates to lure you back. Bookings have remained brisk enough that bargain-basement pricing is uncommon.
