According to both NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 2014 experienced the warmest temperatures on record since 1880. 1998 previously held the record, but 2014 was 0.1 degrees Fahrenheit higher.

The average surface temperature of the Earth has increased annually by approximately 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit since the late 19th century. In total, nine of the ten hottest years to date have all occurred during the 21st century.
