Castaway Jose Salvador Alvarenga describes his ordeal (The Telegraph)
Jose Salvador Alvarenga faces a costly court battle after he became a worldwide sensation when he cheated death with a diet of raw seagulls, fish and turtle blood.
Benedicto Perlera, Alvarenga’s lawyer while he was in hospital in El Salvador after being flown home from the Marshall Islands, claims the fisherman breached a contract they signed by dumping him for a US law firm. He says the decision cost him earnings on a book and film they had planned together about Alvarenga’s odyssey, which began in December 2012 when he was carried out to sea off Mexico during a storm.
He reached the tiny atoll of Ebon in the Marshall Islands 6,500 miles away 13 months later - minus companion Ezequiel Cordova, 24, who died at sea.
Both men were due in court in El Salvador after Perlera appealed an earlier decision not to accept the writ. The lawyer told a local TV station: "He got rid of me in the wrong way, not the legal way and immediately switched to a law firm in the United States.
"They never told me they were going to recognise or reward me for the work you’ve done. This is why I’m suing Jose for a million dollars."
