MEXICO CITY – Senate Human Rights Commission President Angélica de la Peña Gómez blamed Mexico’s current security crisis on former National Action Party (PAN) President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa.

De la Peña, a Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) senator, said that the Tlatlaya case — in which Mexican soldiers allegedly murdered 22 civilians — is a consequence of the PAN’s strategy to fight drug trafficking with the Armed Forces at the beginning of the Calderón administration.

“This is not new and it didn’t arise from events in the past two years and a half,” De la Peña said. “We have had a serious crisis for many years. The Tlatlaya case seems to have a clear origin: Mexican Armed Forces began to take on the responsibilities of the police force. It is important to mend President Felipe Calderón’s decision to take the Army and the Navy out from the barracks to become policemen.”
