Has Mexico Gotten Worse Under President Enrique Peña Nieto? (AJ+)

The Mexican government spent over US$150 million on publicity in 2014, or about US$422,000 a day, according to an annual government report released Tuesday, in what experts and rights advocates believe is the government's attempt to buy off the media.

The spending has increased almost fourfold from government spending on advertising the previous year, which was only US$33 million for the first 10 months of 2013, but US$135 million for the same time period in 2014.

According to the report, the money went predominantly into television, radio, print and internet media, consulting firms, production houses, advertising agencies, and even payments directly to individuals such as radio and television journalists.

Experts have criticized the spending, saying the federal government is trying to control the media –  an issue that has become more urgent this year for President Enrique Peña Nieto as he faces his lowest approval rating since becoming president.
