A group of 9 political prisoners have started off 2015 by launching an indefinite hunger strike to raise awareness of what they deem as an overall growing violence and criminalization of social protest in Mexico.
Members of social organizations, family and friends of the incarcerated activists announced the action in a press conference at sit-in protest outside the Attorney General’s office which began on December 27 in solidarity with the family and classmates of the disappeared Ayotzinapa students.
The sit-in organizers are also holding a 12-hour fast in solidarity with their detained colleagues.
Activist Gabriela Hernandez said the coordinated action is to highlight toward public opinion a “government that invents other forms of repression to cover up what they have previously done. Now they disappear and kill students and we have the obligation to defend them because they are our future.”
During the press conference the incarcerated activists via telephone gave testimony and read statements as to the intentions of their protest.
