Mexico has lost US$6 billion in the last decade as a result of corruption and misuse of public funds, according to a new study released by the Superior Audit Federation (ASF).

According to the report, between 2001-2012, the country lost billions of dollars in irregular transactions and unlawful payments, which are among other indicators of widespread corruption.

The ASF, an agency dependent on the country's Congress, is the only entity monitoring public expenditures and budget execution.

The agency cannot sanction or file charges against people involved and can only give specific information about suspects to the Public Prosecutor's Office.
