MEXICO CITY – The ruling National Revolutionary Party, PRI, of Mexico believes that in 2015 it can move towards the creation of a national anti-corruption system, a proposal that was faced with discrepancies among political forces.
The PRI’s Senate coordinator, Manlio Fabio Beltrones, said in a statement Sunday that advanced agreements between the parties already exist which will form the base for discussing reforms to create a National Public Integrity System.
The disagreements over the anti-corruption measures have slowed down several initiatives in this regard since the beginning of this year when President Enrique Peña Nieto proposed to create a National Anti-Corruption Commission to guarantee information access and transparency.
Peña Nieto emphasized corruption when he announced last month several measures to guarantee security and governance against the infusion of organized crime across several levels of the government, especially the municipalities.
The issue gained new urgency when it was revealed that the mayor of a town where 43 students went missing and are presumed dead was in cahoots with a local criminal gang whose members reportedly murdered the students.
