The Interview Final Trailer - Meet Kim Jong-Un (Sony Pictures Entertainment)
The Verge Update: Sony is now offering The Interview online via YouTube, Xbox Video, and Google Play
U.S. President Barack Obama this week applauded the decision by Sony Pictures to authorize the screening of "The Interview" - its film satirizing North Korean leader Kim Jong-un - at independent theaters in the wake of a cyber-attack allegedly staged by Pyongyang, the White House said.
"As the President made clear, we are a country that believes in free speech, and the right of artistic expression," White House spokesman Eric Schultz said.
The screening of the film in the United States, scheduled for Dec. 25, was cancelled after Sony was the target of a hacking attack, which the U.S. administration attributes to North Korea, and the cyber-pirates subsequently threatened to cause panic at movie theaters showing the film.
"The decision made by Sony and participating theaters allows people to make their own choices about the film, and we welcome that outcome," the spokesman said.
