The ancient bloodsport of cock fighting is illegal in the United States. But in many other parts of the world, it’s still enormously popular.

The birds are specially bred on farms and then trained and groomed for brutal fights that more often than not result in death for at least one of the roosters. The fights are made more violent by the razor-sharp metal spurs that are attached to the roosters’s legs.

Vocativ went to a cock fight in Bogota, Colombia, and met some of the men who are dedicated to their fighting roosters.
