MEXICO CITY – The National Action Party (PAN), Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) and Labor Party (PT) trying to pass the Amnesty Law to free more than 300 members of the Michoacán autodefensas from legal charges, were confronted by senators from the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and Green Party (PVEM).

During a meeting of the Justice Committee to rule on this law, the PRI-PVEM alliance rejected the content presented by its opposition.

The law looks to pardon all those sentenced or accused, those who might have been lucky enough to break the law during a very large and arbitrarily-fixed period of time, said PVEM representative Carlos Alberto Puente Salas.

Puente Salas added that this law is irresponsible in respect to Mexican families, as it makes “false generalizations,” allowing dangerous criminals to return to the streets, only after confirming they were part of a group called the autodefensas.
