The Universal Mobility Law, which was approved Tuesday by the Mexican Chamber of Deputies, aims to ban mass demonstrations, warned lawmakers from leftist parties.
The bill, which was proposed by the National Action Party (PAN) and supported by the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico, will not be sent to the senate, although it is not clear when it will be voted on at the upper house.
Leftist lawmakers, who voted against the bill, say the law will give the State ability to “repress” or prohibit demonstrations if these are determined to inhibit the “universal right to mobility.”
Citizen Movement party deputy, Zuleyma Huidobro, said that if the law is finally approved, Congress will be able to create new laws under the “universal mobility” right that also could aim to prevent demonstrations.
The bill was approved amid one of the country’s worst social crisis in recent memory following the disappearance of 43 Ayotzinapa students on September 26.
