MONTEVIDEO – Uruguayan President Jose Mujica has expressed his support for the Mexican government and his trust “in the political capital that resides in its parties and democratic institutions, in its old historic foundations, to meet the current challenges.”
Mujica made the statement early Monday after the Mexican government summoned the Uruguayan ambassador for an explanation on comments made by Mujica to the magazine Foreign Affairs Latinoamerica on “the tragedy of the abduction of 43 young students of Ayotzinapa.”
“We feel solidarity with Mexico, but also a commitment to the fight, and as much as we can, we are at the disposal of its legitimate government to support it in all that can make this difficult time easier,” the president added.
Mujica also spoke about “the deep bonds of friendship that have historically united and that unites Uruguay, in the present, with Mexico, its institutions and its people” because of which “the tragedy affects us all.”
...On Sunday, the Mexican foreign ministry had expressed its “categorical rejection” of Mujica’s interview with the magazine in which he said, “It gives one the sense, looking from a distance, that it is a kind of a failed state, that the powerful authorities are totally losing control, that they have decayed” in reference to the disappearance of 43 students two months ago.
