Luis Raúl González Pérez (La Jornada)
Mexico City - Winning 97 out of a total of 107 votes cast, today Luis Raúl González Pérez was elected the new president of the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH, Spanish acronym) for the period 2014-2019.
In his second race for the office, and now on leave as general counsel for the UNAM [National Autonomous University of Mexico], González Pérez scored an overwhelming victory over Mauricio Farah Gebara, who has familial ties with Manlio Fabio Beltrones, PRI leader in the Chamber of Deputies, and Sara Irene Herrerías, former president of Provictima.
During the race for the post, González Pérez, 48, suggested in his work plan to offer a practice independent of government, political parties and social and political organizations, without being detached or distant from either the authorities or society. He declared:
"We must redesign the CNDH's activity with a view toward creating a twenty-first century humanist State, which involves undertaking a review and rethinking the CNDH's structure and operating methods, [rethinking] its form and terms, such as how it exercises its independence and authorities, and its policies for addressing complaints and its criteria for the integration of records."
