The ex-governor blames the ex-president for not coming through with the funds to complete a Mayan Disneyland in Yucatán.

Construction of the 16,000-square-meter Palace of the Mayan Civilization began in December 2009 but was abandoned completely in 2012, at which point some 90 million pesos had been invested. It is now becoming overgrown with weeds.

It was supposed to be the centerpiece of a development that the government called Disneyland Mundo Maya, located in the Chichen Itzá arqueological zone. Now, former Yucatán governor Ivonne Ortega blames former president Felipe Calderón for providing just 90 million pesos, rather than the 400 million that had been agreed.

“There were unfair decisions,” said Ivonne Ortega, referring to other projects that received federal funding at that time. A specialist in cultural patrimony has charged that “they let the project die,” devoting attention to the Museum of Mérida instead.
