Miguel Barbosa Huerta, Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) coordinator, said that his party did not protect former Iguala mayor José Luis Abarca Velázquez while he was fleeing authorities.

Abarca Velázquez was recently discovered hiding out in a house in Itztapalapa, Mexico City, around 200 kilometers from Iguala.

If any members of the PRD have any information about the former mayor, be it personal, political or business relations, they should alert the Attorney General’s Office, said Barbosa Huerta.

Interviewed after a Senate forum, the PRD coordinator was asked how Abarca Velázquez received the nomination for mayor of Iguala, considering that it had been known since 2008 that the family of his wife, María de los Ángeles Pineda Villa, had connections to the Los Beltrán Leyva cartel.

In response to the question, Barbosa Huerta again denied PRD involvement in the escape of the former mayor and insisted that without mentioning any names, the main leaders of the New Left group could share whatever possible information they had, if any, about Abarca Velázquez.

“I am saying that under no condition did PRD protect José Luis Abarca in his escape … as I see it, some national leaders should testify to his connections and those connections will come out soon,” Barbosa Huerta said.

Barbosa Huerta also denied any criminal connection among Guerrero senators Armando Ríos Piter and Sofío Ramírez Hernández with the former Iguala mayor, although a video recently surfaced of the three campaigning together.
