The National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (CONAPESCA) adopted a measure for the sustainable management of bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) stocks in the Eastern Pacific Ocean (EPO), which aims to reduce its catch by 45 per cent during 2015 and 2016.
The proposal to cut tuna catches was presented by Mexico, the US and Japan, and unanimously adopted on 29 October, during the 87th Meeting of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC).
CONAPESCA head Mario Aguilar Sanchez explained that the adoption of this binding measure is based on the orientation and consideration of IATTC scientific personnel’s advice as well as that of the International Scientific Committee for Tuna and Tuna-like Species in the North Pacific Ocean (ISC).
The goal is to quickly restore the population to sustainable levels and to have harmonized measures in the total range of bluefin tuna in the EPO and the Western and Central Pacific Ocean (WCPO).
The approved resolution also provides for the reduction of 45 per cent of commercial catches of bluefin tuna throughout the EPO with respect to the levels in 2010-12, the obligation to implement effective and comparable reductions in commercial fishing in the participating countries.
Mexican authorities intend to carry out a thorough assessment of the situation of the whole Pacific bluefin tuna stock to adopt new management measures for periods beyond 2016 in the EPO and the Western and Central Pacific Ocean.
"Both Mexico and the United States expressed their commitment to ensure full compliance measures and periodic reporting of catches to the IATTC," informed CONAPESCA.
