Friends and relatives who have been separated by immigration questions are resuming the tradition of gathering together at the fence dividing Friendship Park on the border between this California city and the Mexican city of Tijuana.
"There are more and more people, mostly families who come here to unite and who are separated by their immigration status," Dan Watman, a member of the Friends of Friendship Park Coalition, told Efe.
Access to the park, with its view of the Pacific Ocean, was restricted in February 2009 by the U.S. government so that a second border fence could be built, a move that ended the more-than-40-year tradition of family gatherings there.
However, the custom is gradually being resumed now that the park has been opened on weekends and Watman said that around 2,000 people have visited it so far this year, many of them making the trip from elsewhere in California, including Orange County and Los Angeles.
