Bribery Important for Getting Ahead in Mexico Mexico News Daily

For Mexicans, using bribery to get ahead in life is a lot more important than it is in other Latin American countries.

A Pew Research Center survey reveals that Mexicans see giving bribes as being an important attribute for getting ahead, the highest among the Latin American countries included in the 44-country survey.

Mexico scored 4.0 on a scale of 0 — not important — to 10 — very important. Next closest in Latin America was Peru at 2.5, while Brazilians gave it the lowest rating at 0.8.

Of all countries surveyed, China scored the highest at 5.5, followed by Jordan, 5.0, and Russia, 4.5. Brazil was also lowest of all 44. El Salvador and Colombia were the next lowest with 1.4 and 1.5, respectively.

The United States scored near the low end with 2.5.
