Thousands gathered at Zocalo Square to attend Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (RuptlyTV)

Thousands of people rallied on Sunday in the Zocalo Square, in Mexico City, to hear a speech given by Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, one of the most important leaders of the left in Mexico and founder of the National Regeneration Movement party (Morena).

Though the rally was called 10 days before the disappearance of the 43 students of the Ayotzinapa Teacher Training College, a large part of the speech focused on them. Lopez Obrador vowed to create a special commission, formed only by civilians, to investigate the violent incidents that happened on September 26.

...Lopez Obrador also used his speech to assert that he has no links with the former governor of Guerrero, Angel Aguirre, and with the Iguala mayor, Jose Luis Abarca, who is on the run and accused of being the mastermind of the students' disappearance.

His remarks came one day after the Mexican newspaper Reforma said that Lopez Obrador, who used to be a member of the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD), did nothing to impede Abarca from becoming a candidate for Iguala mayor despite knowing he was linked with criminal organizations. Both Aguirre and Abarca are members of the PRD.
