Kidnappings are up 36% so far this year, according to the latest report by the Association to Stop Kidnapping, or Alto al Secuestro as it is known in Spanish.

The first nine months of 2014 saw 2,309 cases, up from last year’s 1,697, said Isabel Miranda de Wallace, president of the non-governmental organization, at a press conference in Mexico City yesterday.

Acapulco topped the list of municipalities with the highest number of kidnappings reported — 135, followed by Ecatepec, Cuernavaca, Morelia and Nezahualcóyotl, all of which are in the State of Mexico. The latter leads the list of states where kidnapping was most prevalent, followed by Tamaulipas and Guerrero.

Young men aged 21-30 are most at risk of being nabbed by kidnappers; women represented 29% of victims.
