Mexican leftist deputies have criticized the President Enrique Peña administration for buying a "luxurious" presidential plane.

The cost of the plane, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, will be about 6.7 billion pesos (US$498 million) and will be paid for over 15 years. The original project envisaged a cost of $9 billion pesos, but it was cut after a wave of criticism. The purchase was ordered during Felipe Calderon’s administration and subsequently approved by Peña.

Miguel Alonzo Raya, leader of the Democratic Revolution Party in the Chamber of Deputies, criticized that the federal government is buying the plane while on the other hand cutting spending in several areas.

“It is understandable that the president requires transportation, but also the federal government should understand that the country cannot afford to buy luxuries or such expensive aircraft like this, having so many needs for other things,” said Alonso Raya.
