Mexico’s alternate ambassador to the United Nations, Yanerit Morgan, has affirmed that his country is proposing a constructive debate to be put on the table at the General Assembly in 2016. In a speech in front of the assembly, Morgan said that a reevaluation of the focus on the problem and its treatment are in order, to prevent criminalization of drugs from causing more social harms than the consumption itself.
“Mexico seeks to spur a critical and constructive debate to objectively assess new directions and treatments of the problem, as well as to project more convenient scenarios that are more suitable to each country’s reality,” the Mexican diplomat explained.
He affirmed that the analysis should include health, social, economic and legal aspects in order to create strategies of prevention and harm reduction in the supply and demand for drugs, the violence and social marginalization. The death toll of Mexico’s drug trade has now reached 80,000 dead since the war on drugs was launched, 27,000 disappeared, and many thousands more displaced from their homes. And the problem of demand appears to be an international one.
