Farmers hold a sit-in outside the offices of the Agriculture Secretary (teleSUR)
More than 40 indigenous and farmworker groups are holding a series of protests this week in Mexico City, as well as various states to denounce the political economy of the current administration of Enrique Peña Nieto that is “sinking rural communities in poverty, marginalization and social inequality.”
The dissidents are holding marches and sit-ins in front of the offices of various federal administrations demanding meetings with the Interior Ministry, the Agricultural Secretary, and Economy Secretary. They demand that the authorities address the issues of support for agricultural production, prices for corn and beans and an end to what they say is the criminalization of rural and indigenous leaders.
Farmworkers from the mostly rural states of Chiapas, Tabasco, Oaxaca, Veracruz, Puebla, Guerrero, Morelos, Tlaxcala, Mexico State, Queretaro, Michoacan, San Luis Potosi and Zacatecas are participating in the demonstrations camping outside the offices of the Agricultural Secretary.
The organizations also protest the recent wave of so-called structural reforms, which they say will “lead to the eviction and appropriation of fertile lands for big companies.”
