At least 68 percent of the Mexican population has been affected at some time by a natural disaster. Above all, those that live in poverty, because they live in precarious housing and areas of high-risk from weather events, such as mountainsides, gullies or areas prone to flooding, indicated the Special Program for Climate Change (PECC).
It is evident that the aftermath of extreme weather occurrences, like hurricanes and floods, destroy the lives and assets of millions of people.
“Climate change is directly responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people each year, mostly in the poorest countries,” said the organization Friends of the Earth International.
The PECC, which the federal government initiated a few months ago, pointed out that just between 2000 and 2012, states with the most economic losses from tropical cyclones were Nuevo León, Veracruz, Nayarit and Quintana Roo, with expenses between 8.2 to 39 billion pesos [$616 million to $2.9 billion US dollars]. Next were Sonora, Tamaulipas, Oaxaca, Yucatán and Hidalgo, with losses from 2.5 to 8.2 billion pesos [$188 to $616 million US dollars].
