MEXICO CITY – Individuals and businesses affected by Hurricane Odile, which killed six people and caused extensive damage in Mexico’s Baja California Sur state last month, are eligible for a series of tax breaks, the federal government said.

Hurricane victims, among other benefits, “are exempt from the obligation to make preliminary income tax payments during the months of August, September and October of 2014, as well as for the third quarter and second quarter of 2014, whichever applies,” the Office of the President said.

The measures “authorize the immediate deduction of up to 100 percent of the investment made in the affected areas for the period covering Sept. 15 to Dec. 31, 2014,” the Office of the President said.

Hurricane Odile made landfall in mid-September in Baja California Sur, becoming the second Pacific hurricane to slam Mexico this season.
