The government and civil society in Mexico marked the 29th anniversary of the 1985 earthquake, the worst to ever hit the country. The death count is estimated at 40,000 by NGOs and 10,000 by the government.
At 7:19 a.m. September 19, 1985, the first of two devastating earthquakes ravaged Mexico City, the world's largest metropolis area. The first quake that measured 7.8 on the Richter scale and a second 36 hours later that measured 7.3 left about 10,000 dead, 40,000 injured and thousands homeless. Most of the fatalities came from the first quake. The two temblors, both centered about 250 miles west of Mexico City, triggered fires and trapped thousands in the rubble.
This video documents the health problems and relief efforts in the aftermath of the earthquakes of September 19 and 20, 1985. The first earthquake (8.1 in the Richter scale) left more than 10,000 people dead or missing and thousands more injured. (pahopin)
