Enrique Peña Nieto’s government aims to reduce the budget of the Specialized Unit in Search of Disappeared Persons, which is an agency of the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), by more than 60 percent, according to a provision in the 2015 Federal Budget presented in the Chamber of Deputies.
The budget cut to the Specialized Unit comes 15 months after its creation and a few weeks after Assistant Attorney General Mariana Benítez Tiburcio admitted that the number of persons who have not been found remains at 22,000, [13,000 remaining] from Felipe Calderón’s term, with more than 9,000 of those cases having occurred during the current administration.
A review of the proposed budget sent by Peña Nieto for 2015 revealed a cut of at least 63 percent to the budget for the Specialized Unit.
