The Human Rights Commission in Mexico City is pushing for legislation to protect journalists. The organization said it is confident that the law will be approved by the end of the year.
In an interview, following opening events at the regional convention of the Federation of Latin American and Caribbean Journalists, the President of CDHDF, Perla Gomez Gallardo, said that 60 journalists have been killed in Mexico in the last decade.
Even though Mexico City is not as dangerous of a place for journalists to practice their trade as other parts of Mexico, “one of our goals is to prevent impunity by sending a strong message: we don’t want aggressions against journalists that are carrying out the vital social service of informing the public.”
Along these lines, Gomez Gallardo emphasized the importance of drafting a journalist protection law in Mexico’s capital to serve as an example for the rest of the country.
According to the Inter American Press Association (IAPA), an organization, dedicated to defending freedom of press, attacks against journalists in Mexico are on the rise.
