AccuWeather Update: Hurricane Norbert continues to churn, threatening the shorelines of Southern California. Norbert is expected to begin a gradual weakening trend late on Friday as it moves over increasingly cooler waters. Given the proximity to land, the storm will bring large waves and swells to the coast from Baja California of Mexico into Southern California

Tropical Storm Norbert strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane Wednesday evening. The storm developed just off the coast of southwest Mexico on Tuesday and will impact Mexico into the weekend.

"With low wind shear and warm water in its path for a while longer, it is likely that Norbert intensifies into at least a Category 2 storm in the next 24 hours," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Ken Clark said in his blog.

Prior to being named a tropical storm, impacts were already being felt across southwest Mexico, and locally heavy rain will continue to impact the states of Michoacan, Colima, Jalisco and Nayarit through Thursday.

"Rainfall of 50-100 millimeters (2-4 inches) is expected over the region with local amounts over 150 millimeters (6 inches)," according to Accuweather Meteorologist Rob Miller.

Manzanillo has reported more than 200 millimeters (8 inches) already this week with more rainfall expected through Thursday.

Cihuatlan, Jalisco, has picked up more than 150 millimeters (6 inches) of rain, while Radar, Colima, has reported around 100 millimeters (4 inches) through midday Wednesday.

While flooding will be the biggest concern, heavy rain falling on the rugged terrain of the region can trigger mudslides.
