IACHR: Continued Impunity Regarding Violence Against Women in Mexico Is Disturbing Proceso

The Inter-American Commission of Human Rights (IACHR) is concerned about the impunity regarding violence against women in Mexico, driven by lack of police reports, mistrust of public officials or fear, said Tracy Robinson, Rapporteur on Women's Rights for the Commission (IACHR).

According to Robinson, who took part in the forum “Violence Against Women in Mexico: Challenges and Pending Matters to Fulfill International Obligations in this Issue” at Iberoamerican University, Mexican women don’t get enough information about their reproductive rights. Besides, Robinson said, there are few tools to prevent what she called “humiliating actions” against women. In addition, the new laws seeking to protect women are not enforced as they should be, since those laws have mechanisms that are too weak for follow-through, Robinson said.

While Robinson showed concern regarding the existence and effectiveness of measures to protect women in this country, she emphasized that Mexico also needs to have a policy that clarifies the forms and nature of violence against lesbian and transgender women. Then, she said, all judicial officials and staff should have the knowledge and receive enough training to deal with this issue.
