Hurricane Marie has affected 10,000 families in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca and left three fishermen missing in Baja California Sur.
The Oaxaca government said the storm had damaged roads and caused landslides, overflowing of rivers and flooding of houses. Juquila and Pocutla are the two worst-hit districts.
The government of Oaxaca said on Monday it will ask the Interior Ministry to call a state of emergency and disaster in ten municipalities affected by the storm, so that necessary help can reach the 10,000 suffering families.
At Los Cabos (Baja California Sur), local civil protection director Wenceslao Petit Jacinto said strong waves fueled by the hurricane Sunday caused a boat with seven fishermen aboard to capsize.
“I have been informed that four of the seven fishermen were able to swim to the shore. Unfortunately, we have three missing fishermen”, Petit told the press, while announcing that civil protection troops have begun air and sea operations to locate the missing.
