José Manuel Mireles Valverde (Excelsior)

MORELIA, Michoacán - José Manuel Mireles, former spokesman for self-defense groups, has been hospitalized since Tuesday, August 19, for complications from the diabetes he has had for years, reported attorney Talía Vásquez Alatorre via social networks.

The health of the former leader of Tepalcatepec community guards is stable, but the relapse is due to the poor food he receives at the Federal Center for Social Rehabilitation No. 11, located west of Hermosillo, Sonora. Mireles has been imprisoned since June 30, after his arrest on the coast of Michoacán, accused of carrying weapons for the exclusive use of the armed forces.

Mireles is hospitalized at the clinic in the prison complex; nonetheless, he is upset because they have not delivered books sent to him, and he has no paper to write letters. Attorney Vásquez said that the former spokesman is aware that his detention order is being appealed; for that reason, he asks the Judiciary to demonstrate its independence and sense of justice so he can continue his work and heal the people of Mexico.
