Alejandro Solalinde Guerra, director of the “Hermanos en el Camino” shelter, didn’t say that the recent derailments of the train “La Bestia” were premeditated, but he didn’t say they weren’t.

La Bestia is a Mexican freight train often used by Central American immigrants to transverse Mexico more quickly en route to the United States. Immigrants illegally hitch rides on the top of the train as they make their way across the country. Despite being dangerous, it is a common point of entry for many immigrants to the United States.

While at a Labor Party (PT) forum on security and justice, Solalinde Guerra said it was suspicious that La Bestia had not been derailed in years past and now that there is a large migration of Central Americans, particularly unaccompanied children, there have been ten derailments in the last two months.

“Ten derailments in two months, and in addition, seven train cars overturned. Imagine this a time when the United States is already intervening directly through President Obama, Peña Nieto is intervening, the Secretary of State of the Vatican, Pietro Parolin is intervening — so many people are intervening. And it comes at a time when they are saying that these people cannot cross because the United States doesn’t want them. Then, these derailments happen. All I am saying is that, yes, it is suspicious. How do you explain this? There have never been ten derailments in two months,” he said.
