MEXICO CITY – Isabel Crowley, the representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Mexico, said over the weekend that Mexico has made significant advances in the areas of survival, combatting poverty, development, protection and participation of children and further, that the country has one of the most advanced vaccination schemes in Latin America as well as early education rates.
Today, the Senate recognized the work of UNICEF for more than 60 years of work in favor of children and adolescents in Mexico.
As part of the proceedings, the Committee of Childhood and Adolescence in the chamber will meet in the old house of Xicoténcatl for a forum called “The paper of the municipalities towards legislation that promotes and guarantees the rights of girls, boys and adolescents in Mexico.”
The UNICEF fund celebrated its 60 years of support for the forces within Mexico that work for the protection of girls, boys and adolescence with programs for health, nutrition, early childhood development, protection and education.
The UNICEF representative also highlighted advances that decreased the mortality rate among children under five years of age at a national level. However, she also said that Chiapas and Oaxaca are among the entities that still face challenges to reduce child mortality rates.
While Mexico is advancing, there are still persistent disparities and challenges to overcome in the country, said Crowley.
