Oaxaca’s state government announced an agreement this weekend to end the protest that closed six gas stations in the city, and that members of Section 22 of the teachers’ union will be going to work on Monday when classes resume.

The teachers themselves have indicated they will end their closure of several streets near the zócalo in a protest against education reforms that began July 21. Local businesses were moving in to clean up the areas, since teachers wouldn’t allow access to city maintenance workers.

However, a smaller group of teachers will remain in the Zócalo, and rotating protests will take place in other locations.

Yesterday, six gas stations were blocked by union members, and during a half-hour period teachers gave away gasoline and diesel to motorists, broke windows and stole merchandise.

Section 22 spokesman Mohamed Otaquí Toledo said the demonstrations were staged because teachers were waiting for negotiations with state government officials.
