American consumption of cocaine is the root cause for the Central American refugee crisis here. However, in current discussions very few people are linking America’s drug addiction to the plight of these children, who are forced to become soldiers or sex slaves, which is driving them north to safety.
Americans spent $28 billion a year on cocaine in 2010, according to an Office of National Drug Control Policy and RAND Corporation study. An eight-ball (3.5 grams of cocaine) sells for roughly $150. That is not a lot of money and it is contributing to Central America’s cocaine wars.
Because cocaine air-shipments into Mexico have been mostly shut down, the staging area is now in the Northern Triangle of Central America, which is Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador. With 60 percent of cocaine smuggled from this region, how can we dismiss our culpability in helping to create such a drug-hungry environment that is fostering the drug cartels who are profiting from human trafficking and leading this immigration surge?
We can’t.
