This plucky swimmer is lucky to be alive after a dangerously close encounter with a gigantic crocodile.

The tourist was splashing around off the coast of Mexico's Playa del Carmen when the deadly beast gave chase.

Heart-stopping footage shows the man frantically trying to reach the shore as the predator moves in.

With sightseers screaming from the nearby Boca Paila bridge, in the Sian Ka'an nature reserve, it looks like curtains for the paddler. But he's somehow saved after a quick-thinking passerby throws an object at the creature - and succeeds in scaring it away.

Manuel Carrera captured the astonishing incident on camera and uploaded it to Facebook.
