Over the last 10 years aggression against female journalists has increased by 300% in Mexico, largely due to criminal impunity and sexism among security forces.

The figures were published in a report titled Impunity: Violence Against Female Journalists, A Legal Analysis, presented on Wednesday in the Mexican capital.

Written by the NGO Women Communication and Information (WCI), the report stated that Mexico City is the most dangerous place for female journalists, with 35 percent of attacks registered in the city.

“The Mexican authorities are in debt with freedom of speech and with female journalists, because they don’t have any protection when they are attacked, which leaves the door open for the violence to continue," said the president of WCI, Lucia Lagunes.

Mexican journalist and writer, Lydia Cacho, participated in the presentation of the report, and said that the laws and norms in Mexico that protect journalists lack a gender perspective, and are not very well known by the journalists of the country.
