MEXICO CITY – The Senate’s Foreign Relations Commission demanded that the federal executive branch and the Foreign Relations Secretariat (SRE) protect and promote human rights in the conflict between Israel and Palestine with more proactive actions that condemn intolerance and hate speech that is beginning to permeate the Jewish population.
At a press conference on Monday, Gabriela Cuevas Barrón, the president of the Foreign Relations Commission and National Action Party (PAN) senator; Dolores Padierna Luna, a Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) senator; and Ana Gabriela Guevara Espinoza, a Labor Party (PT) senator, shared their thoughts on the Gaza Strip conflict.
Cuevas Barrón mourned the human losses and the destruction of infrastructure and cultural heritages caused by the war. She said that up to now, more than 200,000 people have been displaced, 1,900 have died and nearly 10,000 have been wounded, mostly civilians. Similarly, 400 children have died, 2,500 are injured and almost 370,000 will need psychological assistance.
Cuevas Barrón also criticized the passiveness and inactivity of the Mexican government in this situation, which she described as wrong, condemnable and chilling, and which encompasses a wave of intolerance, and a xenophobic speech by the people of Israel.
“As the number of casualties and injured increases exponentially, Mexico should express its concern for the escalating violence and should call on the involved parties to act with moderation,” she said.
