The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) reported that of every 100 Mexican pesos generated by the economy, 75 pesos come from formal workers and 25 come from the informal [working for cash] sector.
Presenting the Informal Economy Survey 2003-2012, the President of the Institute, Eduardo Sojo, stated that from those 25 pesos, 10.8% comes from the “informal sector,” i.e., non-registered businesses dedicated to the production of goods or services.
The other 14.2%, he added, corresponds to “the other forms of the informality,” that is to say, jobs that do not provide social security or benefits (subsistence agriculture, domestic services, and informal jobs within formal businesses).
Commerce was the most important sector within the informal economy in 2012, contributing 32.5% of informal Gross Value Added (GVA), followed by 19.2% from service activities (restaurants, entertainment, education, rents, among others), and 16.5% from the manufacturing sector.
Farming activities are in fourth place, with 12.5%. In fifth place is transport, mail and warehousing, with 8.1%. In sixth, other services, except government activities, with 6.4%, and in seventh place construction, with 4.8%.
