Members of social organizations protested outside the office of the Attorney General's Office (PGR) to ask the institution to withdraw charges filed against Dr. José Manuel Mireles, a former leader of self-defense groups in the state of Michoacán.
Members of the Movement for Peace with Justice and Dignity [MPJD] and the National Citizen Congress, as well as activist Julián Le Barón, met with Eliana García, head of the Office for Human Rights of the PGR, and asked that the Federal Public Ministry [investigative police and prosecutors] drop the charges against Mireles, who is being held in prison accused of illegal possession of firearms and drugs.
The PGR's response was that the case is in court, and that it is up to the court to determine the legal status of the former self-defense leader from Michoacán, but that they would inform Attorney General Jesús Murillo Karam of the petition.
