Jasmine Trinca plays a fierce woman who makes the shadowy business of assisted suicide her personal mission. (LuxPrize)

In the Italian drama and character study “Honey,” the tomboy-ishly gorgeous Jasmine Trinca plays the title character, a solitary young woman who works in the suicide-assisted underground in Italy. Honey’s job includes frequent trips to Mexico to buy an over-the-counter barbiturate that is used by veterinarians to euthanize dogs. Because she looks like a college student, she can blend in easily with tour groups and not draw attention to herself.

When she returns to Rome with the deadly drug, which is illegal in Italy, she helps terminally ill patients die with dignity in their homes. She preps the glasses of poison with a vodka chaser and follows a precise, personal code of how the procedure is done. Leaving fingerprints that don’t belong to the dying person are big a no-no, for example. It’s a nerve-racking, tough job, but she appears to be good at her work and treats it with a sense of professional detachment.

...Even though the subject matter is grim, “Honey” is handled with style and the right touches of wit by first-time director Valeria Golino, who is probably best known as an actress in films such as “Rain Man” (1988) and “Big Top Pee-wee” (1988). Golino ends the film on such as an upbeat final note that it will catch most viewers by surprise. She shows great promise as a director who has a confident and deft touch.
