Gloria Hernandez Case, 63 years old, credentialed sex worker (Octavio Gómez)
To commemorate the National Day of Sex Work, the Secretariat of Labour and Employment Promotion (STFE) of the Federal District (GDF) gave 50 credentials to persons exercising sex work and recognized them as self-employed workers with social and labor rights.
The event, led by the head of the agency, Patricia Mercado, represents the second delivery of these documents by the GDF to sex workers since last March, when the first group of 19 persons filed an injunction against the Law of Civic Culture of DF which criminalized prostitution as a crime "against the peace of the people."
Of the 50 credentials, 17 went to transgender workers and the others are women who operate mainly in Cuauhtemoc and Benito Juarez delegations [two of Mexico City's 16 boroughs].
Before dozens of women, men and transgendered in a small auditorium of the STFE, Patricia Mercado, former presidential candidate in 2006 for the now defunct Alternative Social Democratic and Farmer Party, admitted that public policy change was driven by the "Elisa Martínez" Street Brigade in Support of Women directed by Elvira Madrid and Jaime Montejo, who promoted the amparo [protection, injunction] litigated by attorney Barbara Zamora.
