It's no secret, but now it's official: Latin American leaders are the best talkers in the world, at least on Twitter, according to an annual global study of world leaders by PR agency Burson-Marsteller.
Spanish is the most popular language used by world leaders on Twitter, accounting for 32% of all tweets globally, ahead of even English with 28%. Within Latin America, Spanish accounts for 87% of tweets followed by 5% in Portuguese and 3% each for French and English.
According to the study, which analyzed 643 government accounts in 161 countries in early June, the most prolific accounts were all from Latin America.
Mexico took the first two spots with the Mexican presidency (@PresidencyMX) tweeting an average of 78 times per day followed closely by its sister account, the government of Mexico (@gobrep) with 71 tweets, then the presidency of the Dominican Republic (@PresidenciaRD), the presidency of Colombia (@infopresidencia) and the foreign ministry of Venezuela.
Some 92% of South American governments are on Twitter, above the global average of 83% and second globally after Europe (98%). On balance in the region there are 18 presidents tweeting, as well as 17 foreign ministries and 16 government accounts.
Mexico's President Enrique Peña Nieto was the first and only current Latin American leader to sign up for Twitter in 2007, even though he wasn't yet president.
