US scientists have issued a warning that 55% of the world’s population will be affected by rising numbers of smog events which hold regions of stagnant “dead” air.

“Atmospheric stagnation events” were also expected to lengthen by the end of the century, increasing by up to 40 days a year across most of the tropics and sub-tropics.

Stagnation happens when an air mass remains over an area for an extended period, posing a serious pollution threat and leading to soaring rates of heart and lung disease.

Poor air quality causes up to 4.4 million premature deaths around the world, the scientists said. But this will only increase as climate change begins to take its toll and temperatures rise.
