Ana Güezmes García, regional director for ONU Mujeres (El Universal)

ZACATECAS - The United Nations currently has a very particular worry in Mexico, because there is no gender equality with respect to women’s involvement in two areas – municipal environments and business. These are the sector where we see the least participation according to Ana Güezmes García, regional director for UN-Women in Mexico, Central America, Cuba and the Dominican Republic (ONU Mujeres).

In a group interview she admitted that even in Mexico there are important advances in the spheres of women’s education and academics, although she said that economic participation is much lower in women compared to men.

The UN employee recently participated in a state meeting of female political leaders, organized by the electoral institute of Zacatecas. In an interview with local media, Güezmes García said that every time UN-Women measures equality, the results show more and more of it, for it is evident that in recent years Mexico has advanced to the point that the small amount of 30% of the state legislature are women.

She lamented that although the country “has the best educated generation of women in history, women’s economic participation is very low compared to men. We are looking at nearly 43% of educated women of working age finding employment, compared to 75% of men in a similar situation.

And when women do participate in the labor market, they often receive much lower salary for the same work, often in posts with low opportunity for advancement and often facing discrimination.”
